What Exactly is the APS Certificate?

An APS Certificate is a document that proves the authenticity of an Indian student's academic records when they apply to study in Germany. It’s a must-have for any Indian student who wants to apply for a long-stay student visa in Germany. This is kind of the first official step in the journey to study in Germany. The certificate is issued by the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS India), which works in collaboration with the German Embassy in India and the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).

Introduced in India in 2022, the APS certificate verifies your academic documents, ensuring everything is legit before you apply to German universities or for your student visa. The process involves submitting your educational documents, paying a fee, and possibly attending an interview too. Once everything checks out, you’ll receive your APS certificate, which is required to complete your student visa application.

APS certificate is usually required for students who intend to pursue their studies in Germany at a university level. While the APS certificate is not required for short-term courses lasting less than 90 days or if you're going to Germany solely for language studies, it becomes a crucial document for any long-term academic program. Basic Requirements for an APS Certificate

• Completed and signed application form with a recent passport-size photo (not older than 6 months).
• Proof of fee payment
• Aadhaar card (linked with a mobile number).
• Copy of your passport (first and last page).
• Academic records (e.g., Class X, XII, Bachelor's, Master's mark sheets, certificates).
• TestAS results (if applicable).
• Language proficiency certificate (German and/or English, as required).
• Additional documents for those applying after JEE Main/Advanced or other pre-university exams.

How to Get an APS Certificate

Familiarize Yourself with the Requirements: Start this procedure by visiting the official website of APS India to thoroughly review the guidelines and requirements specific to your case.

Collect Required Documents: Next, gather all the necessary documents, such as academic transcripts, certificates, and identification, as outlined by the APS India office. You should have both original and photocopies of these documents ready. If any of your documents are in an Indian regional language, you’ll need to have them translated into English and notarized. This ensures that all documents meet the standards for verification.

Pay the APS Fee: You will have to pay the APS verification fee, which is nonrefundable, to the designated APS bank account. It’s crucial to keep the payment receipt, as this will need to be submitted with your application as proof of payment. Without this, your application won’t be processed.

Submit the Application: After completing the online application form, print it out and sign it. You’ll need to submit this along with photocopies of your required documents either by courier or in person to the APS India office. Ensure that all documents are legible, and keep a record of your courier tracking details if you’re sending them via post. Only submit photocopies—there is no need to send original documents at this stage.

Await Document Verification: Once the APS India office receives your application, they will begin the verification process. The timeframe can vary but typically takes a few weeks. If you’re an undergraduate student who is still in the process of completing your degree, you may be required to attend an interview. If selected for an interview, APS India will notify you about the date and time, usually 10 to 14 days in advance. This interview will focus on your academic achievements and background.

Receive the APS Certificate: After successful document verification, you will receive your APS certificate. Since April 2023, APS certificates have been issued digitally via email, and no paper certificates have been provided. The certificate is valid for three years and can be used to apply to multiple German universities. Having the APS certificate is a mandatory requirement for your German student visa application, so ensure you complete this step early in your application process to avoid delays.

APS Certificate Cost

The average cost for obtaining an APS certificate for students from India is INR 18,000. This non-refundable fee is mandatory and is used to cover the verification and authentication of your academic documents by the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS India). The fee ensures that your educational records meet the necessary standards for applying to German universities and for your German student visa application. Once the payment is made, the processing of your documents begins, and the fee is required whether or not your application is successful.
