In-depth Data from Open Doors Report

The Open Doors Report is an annual report on international education exchange data in the United States. The report, produced by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, provides a comprehensive look at international students studying in the US and American students studying abroad. This year's report shows an unprecedented increase in Indian students enrolling for postgraduation in the US. The number leapt from around 1 lakh in the previous academic year to an impressive 1.65 lakh in the 2022-23 academic year.

Indian Students Making Their Presence Felt

Students from India have been making a significant impact on the American higher education system for several years now. They account for a large portion of the international student community, making India the second-largest sender of international students to the US, only behind China. These students not only contribute academically but also have a significant economic impact on the US. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, international students contributed approximately $44 billion to the U.S. economy in 2019, part of which was contributed significantly by students hailing from India.

Why the United States?

The U.S. has been a favored overseas study destination for numerous Indian students due to its flexible curriculum, extensive research opportunities, and the potential to gain practical experience through options such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT).The surge in numbers indicates that more Indian students are recognizing the advantages of an American postgraduate degree and are willing to invest in an international education. The recent amendments to the Optional Practical Training program, extending the work period post graduation, could also be a major factor encouraging more students from India to pursue higher education in the US.As the U.S. continues to welcome international students, and especially those from India, it will be interesting to see how these numbers continue to grow in the coming years.
